A Layman's Guide to Christian Apologetics

Most of you parents have worked hard to prepare your child for a full, rich life outside your home. Consider this book, as well, as another tool to help prepare them for the changes they will all face as they move out of the home and step into a new world for them.

A Friendly Introduction which Strengthens Our Faith

Dr. Mike Kruger has written a friendly, broad introduction to the disciplines of Christian apologetics. His book is written as a series of letters to his beloved daughter as she journeys into college life. Dr. Kruger remembers all too well the kinds of challenges he ran smack into when he started college many years ago. I deeply appreciate the evident affection he displays in this work, both for his daughter and for Christian students at large.

This is an introductory work. Kruger writes with broad strokes, seeking to share insights which go much deeper than the first reading would suggest. There is a weight to the writing which is evident to those well-read in apologetics, and yet it remains accessible to older high-school and college students. It is an enjoyable read, which is pretty rare these days in the field of apologetics. Dr. Kruger’s warm tone and realistic comments will strike a chord with many young collegiates.

Wide-Ranging Disciplines

Dr. Kruger shares his thoughts and concerns, covering a lot of ground across the breadth of the life of a Christian student. The challenges he addresses could be grouped in summary categories such as philosophy, morality and ethics, historical concerns, and inerrancy. He gives enough information for a Christian student to begin thinking through various challenges to the faith. He is also consistent in writing this as an introduction. While having a long academic career, Kruger works hard here to write to and connect with students who are precisely that, students. He restrains himself from diving into the minutiae of philosophical argument or stinging critique of apologetic methodology. Rather, he keeps the body of the work directed towards supporting and informing students entering college, who are seeing sweeping changes in their everyday world through campus life and their courses of study.

Supporting Students

The author works hard to avoid presuming familiarity with apologetics among his readers. He gives glimpses of our rich history of defending the Christian faith from challenges and attacks. Due to this mindset of “introduction”, his letters (the chapters) are rich with explanations at a basic level. Due to this consistency, I heartily recommend this book for students preparing for and as they enter college. Kruger does not seek to overwhelm his readers with extensive philosophical analyses or textual criticism in its various forms. While well-equipped himself to tackle those areas in great depth, the author does not take the bait which so easily drags many other apologetics works into the mud and out of reach of most students.

A Note To Parents and Church Leaders

Most of you have worked hard to prepare your child for a full, rich life outside your home. Consider this book, as well, as another tool to help prepare them for the changes they will all face as they move out of the home and step into a new world for them. It really is important enough in this time of change for your young adult, that they would read through this book and give consideration to the wisdom the author shares. It would be helpful for you to have read it as well, so you can engage them where they are at in an environment which is hostile to their faith.

A Note to Christian Academics and Publishers

This kind of writing; friendly, warm, and encouraging, is deeply needed across much of Christian faith and life. While I recognize the need for informed and peer-reviewed technical theology, most Christians will never read that kind of book. As well, this kind of encouraging engagement for “Jack and Jill Christian” would benefit them far more than the glut of fiction offered in the last 10-20 years from Christian bookhouses.

Thank you to the Author
